AUTHORLESS: a musical project losing its identity- Peter Richards [ 5/18/2008 - 12:10 ] # The Authorless Project offers 10 song demos by Stargrazer. It is the proposal of The Authorless Project that interested musicians, writers, and recording artists of all genres, ages, and backgrounds treat these "root" demos as if they were their own: free reign is given to re-record, rearrange, re-write or re-mix the root demos.
ROUND ONE: In the first round of Authorless, these ten demos will be distributed to ten musicians of all stripes and experience. These first-rounders are free to re-record – or even re-write – any or all of the songs. They can focus on just one song, split songs into more than one song, or combine songs. They are free to "cover" a song in their own style – or to work with only the existing root recordings. They're welcome to mix-and-match, cut-and-paste, stir, augment, fracture or alter the entire context of the song (or songs). It can become a string quartet or black metal. It can be deconstructed into obscurity, or lovingly/roughly translated into any mood(s) that suits the participants. Heck, you can turn an instrumental into spoken word if you want!
The catch is, you only have two months to complete your part of the project. If you don't have the time, just aren't feeling it, or don't want to participate for any reason, just pass the root demos along to someone else.
ROUND TWO: After the first sixty days, our next round begins. Round One picks whomever they want to be in Round Two. The new recordings and all the root demos are passed on to the next set of authors, and the same rules apply: Anything goes. Preserve the song, augment someone's ideas, or mutate it. After another sixty days, all the results, plus the results of round one and the root demos, are passed on to the Round Three participants.
ROUND THREE – ROUND SIX: Same as the preceding rounds.
ROUND SEVEN: All recordings from rounds 1-6, plus the original root demos, are sent to Satellite Park Studios for Paul Roessler (The Screamers/Nina Hagen/45 Grave/and tons of fine SST Bands) to sort through, mix, add and subtract from, and finally master into the final "Authorless" album. Who knows what amazing forms these little seedling songs will grow into?

Lansing's alternative art space, (SCENE) Metrospace announces a
call-for-proposals for an upcoming exhibit of artwork which engages
time and physical space. All artists over the age of 18 are invited to
submit proposals. Proposals will be accepted through Friday, March 18,
2008
The exhibit, which will be displayed May 3 - June 15, 2008,
is titled “3-D/4-D,” and will focus on three-dimensional and
four-dimensional works of art, in other words, the gallery’s interior
space will be occupied by sculpture, kinetic artworks, and hybrid
artworks that explore notions of time, change, and/or physical space.
Artists are invited to submit any number of pieces that explore this
theme.
The “3-D/4-D” theme may be interpreted through an
assortment of medias and styles including but not limited to:
sculpture, performance, video, sound, graphic design, photography,
collage, painting, installation, interactive or kinetic works of art,
and drawing. Artwork in any media or any combination of media will be
reviewed. Artists of all types are invited to submit current, original
works for this exhibit.
Entry materials must include a current
artist's biography and/or artist resume, as well as an artistic
statement to accompany proposed artwork(s). Proposals may include
images (.jpegs or .gifs) of actual or representative works, either on a
CD mailed to the address above, or e-mailed to
scenemetrospace@gmail.com. All entry materials are due Friday, March
18, 2008 in order to be considered for the exhibit (submissions with
missing information cannot be considered). Artists must also include a
SASE for the return of their materials. There is no entrance fee. Early
submissions are encouraged.

Metrospace announces a call-for-proposals for an upcoming exhibit of
artwork which has traveled by post.
Mail art is art which uses
the postal system as a medium. Mail artists typically exchange artistic
works in any medium, including but not limited to: painting, drawing,
collage, graphic design, sculpture, assemblage, video- or audio-based
works, conceptual works, and installations. (SCENE) presents an
in-depth investigation into this artform, which evolved between the
1950s and the 1990s, and was influenced by such art movements as Dada
and Fluxus. The size and scope of each artwork depends on the artist.
For (SCENE)’s exhibit, the following definitions of Mail Art will be observed:
1.
v. Like a message in a bottle mediated by the sea, so mail art switches
hands and is thus transformed. 2. n. The last object touched by one’s
self, representing one’s self for another to hold. 3. n. An artwork
that considers the journey as much as the destination.
Artists of all types are invited to submit current, original works for this exhibit. The exhibit will take place from January 11, 2008 through February 24, 2008. All entry materials are due Friday, December 14, 2007, in order to be considered for exhibit. Early submissions are encouraged. Actual works must be received no later than Friday, January 4, 2008.

upcoming exhibit based on the concept and technique of collage.
(SCENE)
presents an in-depth investigation into an artform that has evolved
from scissors, glue, and magazines into the contemporary fine art
realm, encompassing assemblage, video and audio collage, and conceptual
artworks.
The exhibit will be juried by North Carolina-based Julie Thomson, whose dedication to collage includes self-publishing La Colle,
a 'zine style journal chronicling collage artworks, as well as
providing information and reviews about collage artists and
collage-themed exhibits.
Artists of all types are invited to submit current, original works for this juried exhibit. The exhibit will take place from October 27, 2007 through December 16, 2007. All entry materials are due Friday, October 5.

Leaderless: Underground Cassette Culture Now
Exhibition on view from May 12 – May 26, 2007
Opening Reception and Book Launch: Saturday, May 12, 5 – 7 PM
Printed Matter, Inc. is pleased to announce an exhibition surveying
contemporary American cassette culture. Leaderless: Underground
Cassette Culture Now will open on May 12 and run through May 26.
Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue at 22nd Streets.
From bedrooms and dorm rooms, garages and dingy basements, Printed
Matter and Heavy Tapes have gathered the leaders of the American
underground tape culture movement—a geographically and generationally
diverse community centered around the thriving noise, psych, and
experimental music scenes. Such an exhibition might lead one to believe
that “tapes are back” though the truth is that they never left, having
been the chosen medium of this particular community from the late 70s
onward. Unlike manufactured CDs or vinyl, tapes are analog, cheap and
easily made at home with accessible and rudimentary equipment (i.e. no
computers), making them the logical choice for a community that is
constantly evolving and producing. Tapes also offer a unique
perspective for those who are put off by the ubiquity and harsh
aesthetics often associated with CDRs.
For the duration of the exhibition, Printed Matter’s back room will be
transformed into a cassette shop—with hundreds of titles exhibited and
available for purchase. Boom boxes will give audience members the
opportunity to sample and explore. Guest curators (among them Thurston
Moore from the iconoclastic noise band Sonic Youth, Chris Freeman—the
founder of cassette distributor Fusetron, and Dominick Fernow of
Hospital Productions) will also present out-of-print cassettes from
their collections.

Tapes (MI), Animal Disguise (MI), Bone Tooth Horn, Callow God (CA),
Cherried Out Merch (OR), Chondritic Sound (MI), Drone Disco (OH),

(MI), Hanson Records (MI), Heavy Tapes (NY), Hospital Productions (NY),
Iatrogenesis (OR), Ides (IL), Friendship Bracelet (MA), Loveless Tapes
(NJ), Middle James CO (ON/CA), Monorail Trespassing (CA), Nihilist
Productions (IL), Not Not Fun (CA), Psychform (WA), RRRecords (MA),
Rundownsun (BC), Since 1972 (NY), Spite (NY), Stammer Tapes (NY),

Leaderless: Underground Cassette Culture Now coincides with the No Fun
Fest—a four day noise festival that will take place at the Hook in Red
Hook, Brooklyn from May 17 – 20th. Now in itsfourth year, No Fun Fest
features some of the world’s premiere noise musicians and practitioners.

Robert Busby- Peter Richards [ 2/28/2007 - 14:41 ] # We are deeply saddened by the loss this week of Robert
Busby, owner of Lansing's Creole Gallery. It was a sickening shock to
hear of his death yesterday. Robert's gentle presence and defining role
in re-shaping the Old Town neighborhood into an arts destination will
never be
forgotten. In a tangible way, Old Town itself is a physical
manifestation of Robert's spirit, which was too big to be contained in
a single person. His vision for Old Town and all of the arts was
contagious, and he inspired others to be leaders. Our feelings
stretch out to his family, friends, and all the
people whose lives he enriched.
If we can make even half of the impact you made on art and on the
community, we will feel we have done a good job. We miss you Robert.

(SCENE) Metrospace Update- Peter Richards [ 1/10/2007 - 13:25 ] # (SCENE) Metrospace, East Lansing's alternative art and performance
space, will soon be leaving it's home of three years at 303
Abbott. An exact date and destination are unknown at this time,
but the former Kent Bank building on the corner of Abbott and Albert is
slated for demolition sometime in 2007.
In the mean time, (SCENE) continues a full schedule of exhibits and entertainment:
Friday, January 19 - (SCENE) debuts "DATA TRANSFER," an exhibit of technology-driven art with a public reception from 6-9 PM featuring music by Blank Artists: a live set by Theater of the Absurd and a DJ set by Drew Pompa. Additionally, there will be interactive digital sand-painting on an illuminated sand table provided by David Ringlein. The public can produce and print their own full-color digital sand paintings!
Saturday, January 20 - witness the return of 517NoiseFest:
visit 517Noise for more details! This is a shared event spanning three communities and three venues: the DAAC in Grand Rapids and the Panopticon
in Lansing. Noise artists appearing on the Friday and Sunday
bracketing (SCENE)'s Saturday show include such noise movement
luminaries as Dead Machines, Hot Tapes, Princess Dragon Mom, Aaron Dilloway, and Treebot.
Thursday, January 25 - (SCENE) will host virtuoso marimba soloist Nathaniel Bartlett.
Feauturing a state-of-the-art digital sound projection array, Bartlett
plays "serious modern Western art music on a serious modern instrument
- the modern marimba." We are pleased to stage this concert,
which is open to the public. Doors open at 6:00 PM, the music
begins at 7:00 PM, and there is a nominal cost of $5 for this unique
sensory experience, offering "total immersion in sound." Seating
is limited.

(SCENE) Metrospace announces a Call-For-Proposals for "Sonic Landscapes," a sound-based art exhibit
EAST LANSING, Mich. - East Lansings alternative art
space, (SCENE) Metrospace announces a call to artists for an upcoming
exhibit based on the act of creating and experiencing SOUND. All
artists over the age of 18 are invited to participate. Applications
will be accepted through Friday, August 4.
Whether we experience it as entertainment or as an
integral part of our daily lives, sound is not just something we hear.
It is something we feel - emotionally and otherwise -- and is often
deeply ingrained in our personalities. (SCENE) Metrospace is looking
for artists whose work incorporates sound. This could be interpreted
through an assortment of medias and styles including but not limited
to: recorded sound, found sound, manipulated sound, sound assemblage,
field recordings, sound-producing devices, sound-based installation,
interactive pieces, performance, and video. Artwork in any media will
be reviewed.
To apply, artists must submit images or documentation
representative of the work to be exhibited, a description of your
project idea, an artistic statement and a resume. Artists must also
include an SASE for the return of their materials. There is no entrance

CD Release March 25 / "They Die In Movies"- Peter Richards [ 3/14/2006 - 15:07 ] # 
Saturday, March 25th at Scene Metrospace Gallery, bear witness to the culmination of months of labor and love...
They Die In Movies is a narrative-based installation produced and directed by Jeni Mc, featuring fashions by Berry Noxon,
and photography by Cody Hinze and Juan Beltran. It is film-themed
and has been variously described as "a movie that never happened" and
"a look through a director's eye." The exhibit takes place during
the East Lansing Film Festival and continues on through May 13.
 Simultaneously, It Takes A Village To Make Records will release the much-anticipated "First-Hand Accounts, Theories & Their Repercussions" CD compilation.
A double-length album on one CD, FHATATR is a genre-hopping collection
of original independent music from all over the country.
The CD release will feature a giant mix CD swap! Bring your own homemade mix CD to trade for a copy of the compilation CD -- other than that, it's FREE! Bring an extra copy of your mix to trade with other release party-goers...
There will also be performances by Rai and Canada, as well as a screening of "Hello and Goodbye" by Detroit's Test Pattern Pictures.

 "First-Hand Accounts, Theories, & Their Repercussions,"
a CD compilation of independent music, is in the middle stages of
production. Over thirty musicians and bands have responded from
Texas, New York, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Styles range
from fingerstyle acoustic guitar to electroclash, from lo-fi to hi-fi,
from calm to cathartic.

where you can hear some of the songs, view album artwork, read
mini-interviews with the artists involved, and find out how to get your
very own copy of this FREE compilation.
This week's songs are from singer-songwriter Jen Sygit, musicologist and fingerstyle guitarist Nick Schillace, Chicago-based organ rockers Oh My God, and Michigan bedroom-recordist Stargrazer. These songs will be posted until December 9.
Next weeks songs will feature multi-instrumental ensemble Canada, Texan synth-pop experimenters The Mnemonic Devices, electronic music from Rubber Band Banjo, and rock'n'roll goodness from The Casionauts.

 EAST LANSING, Mich.— (SCENE) Metrospace announces the opening of its
latest exhibition, “Cir•cus/Car•ni•val” on Friday, Nov. 18.
“Cir•cus/Car•ni•val” explores the imagination, oddities, animals,
wonder, excitement, and misfortunes of the events that have become a
cultural tradition: the Circus and the Carnival.
The 12 local and national artists participating in “Cir•cus/Car•ni•val”
each explore diverse aspects of the events through various medias and
themes:
• New Jersey based photographer Melanie Heinrich has spent over 30
years of her life documenting behind the scenes of the carnival will
display her prints and documentary.
• Beulah based Tara Hackett’s mixed media paintings capture the charm
and history of the traveling circus and carnival throughout the 50's
and 60's.
• Krys Tourtois, a Lansing based artist will explore an unromanticized
and often overlooked aspect of the carnival experience in her paintings
of sideshow women.
• Detroit based Carl Oxley explores a happy-go-lucky and exciting view in his colorful pop-art paintings.
• Ann Arbor based Amanda Miller will display her mystifying freak show paintings.
• Lansing based artist Tim Lane will display a quirky and fun carnival game installation.
• Farmington Hills based mosaic artist Ellen Stern expresses an
imaginative spin on the circus with her ceramic, fiber, and
installation works.
• Highland and Detroit based artists Chris Sandon and Jason Lee Starin
will team up to make humorous psychedelic folk art that illustrates the
stranger side of the events.
• Saginaw based artist Janie Peters will uncover a darker aspect of the
circus and carnival, the mistreatment of animals, with her mixed media
sculpture.
• Lansing based artist John Kroneman will explore his personal roots to the circus with paintings of his ancestors.
• Columbia, MO based artist Claudia Drake uses digital collage, fusing
together antique engravings into her own juxtapositions to express her
vision of the carnival.
“Cir•cus/Car•ni•val” opens with a free public reception at (SCENE) Metrospace on Friday, Nov. 18 from 6-10 p.m.
The reception will feature a special circus-themed performace from
Lansing spacerock favorites, Calliope. Circus and carnival themes
events, games, and excitement will take place all throughout the
evening. All food will be graciously provided by Spartan Signature
Catering. All ages are welcome, costumes are encouraged, and space is
limited.

The Little Bang Theory- Peter Richards [ 11/4/2005 - 22:42 ] # FRANK PAHL (www.frankpahl.com) is one of the most distinctive and
charming voices in contemporary American music. He has received
numerous awards, grants, and residencies for his innovative
compositions using homemade automatic instruments. Inspired by the
works of Trimpin and Pierre Bastien, Pahl began to delve deeply into
the creation of automatic instruments, using these instruments as the
fundamental foundation of his compositions. His work has included
pieces for automatic string quartet, automatic doorbell quartet, and
bicycle quartet. Pahl has received over 60 commissions for theater,
film and dance and his music appears on over 60 releases. His latest
band, Little Bang Theory, is named after the essay of the same title by
the improvising musician Frederic Rzewski. Rzewski describes an
approach to music well suited to improvisation. Basically each note can
be seen as a little bang, with the possibility of introducing a new
universe of music. Though the band performs on toy instruments the
music runs the gamut from improvisation to toypop to
soundtrack-inspired music...not easy to describe...best to see. Toy
Suite #2 was made possible by a 2005 Meet the Composer grant.

NICK SCHILLACE (www.nickschillace.com) is a Detroit area composer,
teacher, and musicologist exploring what it means to be an American
musician. In 2002 he completed a graduate thesis on the late guitarist
John Fahey, and utilizes Fahey's self-described style of syncopated
"American Primitive" fingerstyle guitar as the foundation for his own
technique. This style, based on early forms of blues, folk, and
old-time music, provides the perfect foundation for larger and more
expansive musical compositions incorporating a wide range of his own
idiosyncratic influences. He has been touring extensively both locally
and nationally since releasing his debut acoustic instrumental album
"Box Canyon" in June 2005. He also writes and performs with the groups
indoorpark and Big Lake Trawler.

Redefining FREE*- Peter Richards [ 10/14/2005 - 12:17 ] # "Congratulations! You've been selected to win a FREE* iPod Nano!"
How many times a day do you see that message or a similar one ( Free gas for a year! Free XBox! Free
frontal lobotomy!) in an obnoxiously flashing ad banner or pop-up
window on your browser? Well after ignoring them for years, I finally
decided to see what the asterisk in "Free" was all about. My task:
throwing a football through a swinging tire swing. After a little
practice (and I'm talking about maybe 30 seconds of practice) I was
able to nail the throw every time. Wow! Wish I could do that in reality.
Each
time, I was redirected to a page (accompanied by tinny applause to
celebrate my deadeye-accurate cyber toss) that said something along the
lines of "You must participate in 6 different things, which may involve
making small purchases, filling out surveys, or applying for credit
cards."
Read: Here's a shiny, shiny shovel. Start digging.
Define "small." Tell me how applying for a credit card that I did not do the rate homework on benefits me?
It's a little bit like saying "Free paycheck*!"
* in
exchange for forty hours of work each week, hours to be determined by
employer. Company dress-code must be adhered to. Participation required.
I'd
like to see some control over the word "Free" by the folks that monitor
truth in advertising. Free can be with no strings attached -- like when
Fugazi gave away copies of their first CD and played free shows. Free
can be "value-added," like "buy one, get one free" offers. Maybe these
internet adverts think this is a "value add-on." If so, say so. But if
I have to jump through hoops with my wallet conveniently splayed open, it's not free.
Yes, I'm advocating dreaded regulation: a regulation in service of truth.

Hurricane Benefit This Monday- Peter Richards [ 9/9/2005 - 14:33 ] # 
There will be a Hurricane Relief Benefit at Lansing's Temple Club this Monday, September 12.
Lansing musicians are donating their time and talents to raise
much-needed funds for our people in New Orleans who have lost so much. 100% of the proceeds from the door will go to Red Cross efforts
to transport, feed, clothe, and shelter the thousands affected by this
national disaster. If you're in town, please come out and support this
effort -- it's sure to be a night of great music, but let's remember
the seriousness of the situation and our responsibility to help our
neighbors in Louisiana who've been hit so hard. Give generously.
The show starts at 8:00 pm.
The line-up includes John Wesley Harding Overdrive, the Failers, The
Gentleman Callers, The Hop-Ups, Eric Kelly and the Dirty Johns, The
Pantones, Mike Vasas and The Beasts of Burden, Firewheel Handshake,
Hall & Morgan, and Stephen Leonard. Special thanks to Joel

Call for Artists
The first annual REO Town Art Market will be held on the historic streets of REO Town in Lansing, Michigan. REO Town is known for its unique atmosphere, which combines a respect for culture and history and an acceptance for new ideas. This event will showcase a wide variety of Lansing’s artists and musicians, as well as local businesses.
This show is open to anyone who wishes to participate! This is not a juried show, just an opportunity for artists and musicians to exhibit their talent. We welcome all types of creative people, along with their friends and family.
There is a $10 entry fee and a $5 table rental fee.
Artists may arrive at 10:00am on August 20th to set up their tables. The Art Market will run from noon until 6pm. Spaces will be approximately 8ft. wide and will run along South Washington on the sidewalks. Spaces are first-come, first-serve on the day of the event. Artists who have special requests for space for a tent or a different exhibit space should indicate that when registering.
· We
are looking for a diverse array of vendors: fine art, crafts, food
goods,
jewelry, clothing, musicians, etc.
· Demonstrations welcome!
· All work sold must be made by the artist selling the work.

Independent Music Sought- Peter Richards [ 7/27/2005 - 09:45 ] #  It Takes A Village To Make Records, an independently-run music label, seeks tracks for an upcoming, FREE sampler of independent music and soundscapes. ITAV
specializes in unique, handcrafted recordings, a hands-off approach to
creative control and copyright ownership, and visually stunning graphic
design and packaging. ITAV releases are designed to grab potential
purchasers from across a room and draw them to your music.
"First-hand Accounts, Theories, and their Repercussions"
will act as a calling card for ITAV, rather than a label roster
compilation. In that spirit, ITAV seeks music of all forms, from traditional folk to noise.
Additionally, songs which demonstrate a strong independent vein are
desired, whether that is shown by experimental qualities or simply by
the song's lack of slickness. "First-hand Accounts" will contain live
tracks, demos and/or alternate versions and home recordings. Tracks are
sought from all types of artists, famous or unknown.
Artists will retain full rights to their music.
"First-hand Accounts" will be distributed FREE as an educational tool
and an example of ITAV's creative expertise. For that reason, ITAV
cannot offer compensation for your track, however full credits will be
included in the packaging, including songwriting credits, "appears
courtesy of..." messages, and/or internet resources.
